Benjamin Christensen’s silent film moves from medieval ideas about witchcraft into staged scenes of grave robbing, torture, possessed nuns, and a satanic Sabbath, proposing that many accused witches may have suffered from the same conditions his own era labeled hysteria. Rather than follow one story, it unfolds in dramatic vignettes that mix historical argument with grotesque imagery and flashes of dark humor. Maren Pedersen and Clara Pontoppidan are among the performers in these re-creations, which trace how superstition, fear, and punishment shaped views of witchcraft from the Middle Ages into the modern age.
