On New Year’s Eve, a legend says the last person to die before midnight must drive Death’s carriage for the coming year. After a fight in a cemetery, David Holm (Victor Sjöström), a violent alcoholic already sliding toward ruin, is forced to confront that fate through visions of his own past. Hilda Borgström is the Salvation Army sister who still believes he can be redeemed, even as illness closes in around them. Victor Sjöström’s silent Swedish film moves between flashbacks, deathbed scenes, and ghostly visitations, turning a supernatural premise into a stark story of guilt, cruelty, and the approach of midnight.
