As a dying man in his forties looks back on his life, memories of childhood, his mother, wartime upheaval, and small domestic moments begin to overlap with larger turns in Soviet history. Margarita Terekhova stands at the center of those recollections, while Ignat Daniltsev appears in the film’s fragments of family life and youth. Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, the film moves through flashbacks, dreams, newsreel-like images, and scenes from everyday Russia rather than a straight chronology. Arseny Tarkovsky’s poetry is heard on the soundtrack, adding another autobiographical thread to a portrait of memory, family, and a country under pressure.
