Ivan's Childhood

DramaWar95 min

During World War II, 12-year-old Soviet orphan Ivan Bondarev works as a scout behind German lines, slipping through swamps and battle zones for the army while three officers try to shield what remains of his childhood. Nikolay Burlyaev is Ivan, watchful and unsentimental, with Nikolay Grinko and Valentin Zubkov among the soldiers who take him in. The film shifts between the brutal routines of the front and brief, dreamlike memories of family life before the war, keeping Ivan’s loss and the officers’ concern in the foreground.
