Rob Reiner is filmmaker Marty Di Bergi, trailing metal band Spinal Tap through an American comeback tour as the group lurches between bad luck, inflated legend, and undersold dates. Christopher Guest and Michael McKean are among the band members at the center of the chaos, with interviews, rehearsals, press events, and backstage detours gradually sketching out years of lineup changes, old albums, and self-created mythology. Groupies, promoters, and hangers-on crowd the margins as the comeback keeps threatening to come apart.
