A filing error in a dystopian Britain pulls low-level bureaucrat Sam Lowry into an investigation that his elaborate fantasies of heroism never prepared him for. Jonathan Pryce is Sam, a government clerk who escapes his routine through recurring dreams, then becomes entangled in a wrongful arrest, a wanted man named Harry Tuttle, and the woman he has been imagining from afar. Terry Gilliam fills the film with malfunctioning machinery, endless paperwork, and Christmas-season anxiety, while Robert De Niro and Michael Palin move through the same system from very different corners.
