Barbara Stanwyck is Martha Ivers, a hard, ambitious businesswoman whose marriage to Kirk Douglas's Walter, Iverstown's alcoholic district attorney, is built on a secret the two have carried since childhood. When their old friend Sam comes back after years away, his return threatens the arrangement that lets them dominate the corrupt city. Van Heflin's Sam is a drifter pulled into the couple's orbit just as the long-buried death of Martha's wealthy aunt starts pressing against the present.
