James Cagney is Rocky Sullivan, a gangster who comes back to his old tenement neighborhood after prison and finds himself treated like a folk hero by a pack of tough boys. His childhood friend Father Jerry Connolly, embodied by Pat O’Brien, took the opposite road: he’s now a Catholic priest trying to steer those kids away from the kind of life Rocky represents. Their reunion turns a boyhood bond into a struggle over loyalty, influence, and the future of the neighborhood.
