As death row inmate Matthew Poncelet nears his execution, he writes to Sister Helen Prejean, a local nun who agrees to counsel him and help with his final appeal. Susan Sarandon's Helen moves between prison visits, Poncelet's family, and the relatives of the murdered young couple, confronting the damage surrounding the case as the date closes in. Sean Penn is Matthew, guarded and increasingly exposed as their correspondence turns into a tense relationship shaped by faith, denial, and accountability.
