Released from the state hospital where he has lived since childhood after killing his mother and her lover, Billy Bob Thornton's Karl Childers tries to make a place for himself in small-town Arkansas. He finds work at a repair shop and forms a tentative bond with a local boy (Lucas Black) and the boy's mother (Natalie Canerday), stepping into a world that feels both ordinary and unfamiliar after years of institutional life. Thornton keeps the story close to Karl's plainspoken view of the town and the people who slowly let him in.
