Susan Morrow (Amy Adams), a gallery owner drifting through an unhappy marriage, receives a manuscript from Edward, the ex-husband she left two decades earlier. As Susan reads, Jake Gyllenhaal’s Edward gives way to the story on the page: Tony Hastings, a mathematics professor whose family trip turns violent on a dark stretch of road. The manuscript’s cruelty and its pointed dedication pull Susan back through memories of their relationship, blurring her polished present with the revenge narrative Edward has sent her. Tom Ford’s film moves between present-day Los Angeles, flashbacks, and the world inside the novel.
