After surviving a school shooting in 1999, teenage Celeste channels the aftermath into a memorial song that launches her toward pop stardom. Raffey Cassidy is Celeste in those early years, a gifted kid moving into the machinery of fame with her sister close by and a hard-charging manager (Jude Law) steering the ascent. By 2017, Natalie Portman’s adult Celeste is a scandal-shadowed superstar and mother to a teenage daughter, trying to hold together a comeback when another act of public violence forces old images and questions back into view.
