In 1980s Dublin, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo is Conor, a 14-year-old trying to escape a tense home life and survive a rough new school. After spotting the enigmatic Raphina, Lucy Boynton’s cool older girl, he tells her she can star in his band’s music videos—before he actually has a band. Calling himself Cosmo, Conor scrambles to pull together a group of classmates, write songs, and keep up the image he’s invented. As the band takes shape, the film tracks teenage reinvention through schoolyard chaos, family strain, first love, and a flood of synth-pop and rock influences.
