Nino Manfredi is an Italian migrant worker trying to make a life in Switzerland, moving from one menial job to the next as each attempt to get established slips out of reach. Cut off from home and struggling to fit into a society that keeps him at arm’s length, he scrambles for work, shelter, and some stable place in his adopted country. Anna Karina appears among the people he encounters along the way. Bread and Chocolate follows his mix of stubborn optimism, embarrassment, and survival instincts as everyday setbacks turn a fresh start into a precarious, often lonely existence.
