Le Chat

Drama87 min

Julien Bouin lives in a small French house slated for demolition, sharing it with a wife he can barely speak to. Jean Gabin is Julien, a former typographer who has withdrawn into silence, while Simone Signoret’s Clémence, once a circus performer, meets him with equal bitterness. The couple mostly communicate through notes left on scraps of paper, turning everyday life into a quiet standoff. Julien’s one visible tenderness is reserved for a stray cat named Greffier, and that attachment becomes another source of hostility inside a marriage worn down to routine, resentment, and the cramped spaces they can’t quite leave.
