42nd Street

ComedyDramaMusicalRomance89 min

A cash-strapped producer and a driven director race to get a Broadway musical on its feet, only to have opening night thrown into chaos when the star is injured and an unknown chorus girl must step in. Warner Baxter is the exacting director pushing rehearsals toward a make-or-break premiere, while Ruby Keeler’s young chorine is suddenly handed the lead. Bebe Daniels figures prominently as the established star, with Ginger Rogers in the backstage mix of rivalries, flirtations, and frayed nerves. The film moves between rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms, and the stage itself, building to Busby Berkeley’s elaborate musical numbers.
