A noted professor and his dim-witted apprentice set out to investigate rumors of vampires and find themselves chasing a missing young woman into a castle full of aristocratic undead. Jack MacGowran is the absent-minded scholar leading the hunt, while Roman Polanski’s apprentice turns each discovery into another stumble. Sharon Tate appears as the woman at the center of their rescue attempt, with Ferdy Mayne looming over the story as the local vampire nobleman. Directed by Polanski, the film folds old-world gothic trappings—candles, capes, drafty halls—into broad physical comedy and a dry, off-kilter sense of humor.
