One A.M.
ComedyFamily26 min
In this 1916 silent comedy, Charles Chaplin is a drunken homeowner whose late-night return turns into a drawn-out struggle with his own house. A key won’t cooperate, the stairs seem to fight back, and even the bed becomes an adversary as he lurches from room to room in evening clothes and a top hat. Albert Austin appears at the start as the taxi driver who drops him off, before the film narrows almost entirely to Chaplin on his own. It’s one of the rare Chaplin shorts where he isn’t playing the Tramp, built instead around a single man, a single house, and a string of physical gags.
