The story
A restaurant waiter slips away on his lunch break for a trip to the roller-skating rink, where Charlie Chaplin turns every glide, stumble, and collision into a fresh round of chaos. Directed by Chaplin, the 1916 silent comedy starts with busy restaurant mishaps before following his familiar Tramp into a crowded rink full of flirtations, spills, and narrowly avoided pileups. Edna Purviance appears among the patrons he tries to impress, while Eric Campbell brings extra trouble as a broad-shouldered presence in the crowd. The setup is simple, but the skating lets Chaplin build one visual gag after another out of balance, timing, and crowded space.
