After American engineer Peter Bowman is kidnapped by anti-government forces in a South American country, the $5 million ransom demand falls on a failing employer that refuses to pay. Meg Ryan's Alice Bowman is left to handle the crisis herself, so she brings in Russell Crowe's Terry Thorne, a freelance hostage negotiator with a hard, procedural understanding of kidnappings, proof-of-life demands, and extraction plans. As Peter (David Morse) remains in captivity, Alice and Terry work through stalled money, corporate indifference, and the dangerous logistics of getting a hostage out alive.
