In 1910s Paris, Charles Farrell is Chico, a sewer worker whose bitter faith is shaken when he rescues a young woman from the street and tells the police she is his wife. Janet Gaynor’s Diane has been exploited by her sister, and Chico’s impulsive lie gives them both a way out. What begins as protection becomes a fragile home life, with Chico’s stubborn optimism and Diane’s gratitude slowly turning into love amid poverty, prayer candles, and the hard routines of the city.
