In 1991 Pittsburgh, shy freshman Charlie spends most of high school on the sidelines until two seniors pull him into their orbit. Logan Lerman is Charlie, a quiet observer whose friendship with Emma Watson’s Sam and her stepbrother Patrick opens the door to parties, first love, mixtapes, and midnight screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. As Charlie starts to feel less alone, the film keeps close to his inner life, where depression and buried memories sit just beneath the rush of new friends and first experiences.
