Amistad

DramaMystery155 min

In 1839, Mende captives taken aboard the Spanish slave ship La Amistad seize control of the vessel off Cuba, hoping to force a return to Africa. Instead they are intercepted near the American coast and jailed, turning their fight for freedom into a legal battle that reaches far beyond the ship itself. As courts argue over whether the captives are property, pirates, or kidnapped people with the right to resist, the case pulls in diplomats, abolitionists, and the U.S. government. Cinqué, played by Djimon Hounsou, becomes the center of the struggle, while former president John Quincy Adams, played by Anthony Hopkins, is drawn into the final appeal.
