Near the end of World War II, a Canadian nurse shelters in a ruined Italian monastery with a badly burned patient whose scattered memories lead back to the Sahara before the war. Juliette Binoche's Hana tends to the man as his story unfolds in fragments: Ralph Fiennes is Count Almásy, a Hungarian mapmaker working with British explorers in 1930s Egypt, where desert expeditions, political tensions, and an affair with a married woman begin to reshape his life. Kristin Scott Thomas and Willem Dafoe are among the figures bound up in that past, as the film moves between wartime Italy and the vast North African landscape.
