Smiles of a Summer Night
ComedyRomance109 min
Early-20th-century lawyer Fredrik Egerman enters a summer weekend with more than one romantic problem: his marriage to the much younger Anne remains unconsummated, his son is drawn to his new stepmother, and an old lover decides to see whether she can win him back. Gunnar Björnstrand is Fredrik; Eva Dahlbeck’s Désirée, an actress and former flame, arranges a country-house gathering where four couples circle through jealousy, vanity, and desire. Directed by Ingmar Bergman, the film turns formal manners, flirtation, and old resentments into a chain of wagers, embarrassments, and shifting pairings under the long light of a Swedish summer night.
