Monika, a working-class teenager in Stockholm, falls into a reckless affair with shy delivery boy Harry, and the two abandon their families for a summer escape in the archipelago. Harriet Andersson is Monika, restless and headstrong, opposite Lars Ekborg’s Harry as their stolen beachside freedom starts to collide with money, responsibility, and adulthood. Directed by Ingmar Bergman, the film follows their romance from cramped city routines to sunlit islands, holding close to the impulsiveness of first love and the pressures waiting beyond a season lived apart from everyone else.
