In 1950s Idaho, sisters Ruth and Lucille are shuffled between elderly relatives after their mother abandons them, until their aunt Sylvie arrives to take them in. Christine Lahti is Sylvie, a wandering, unconventional woman whose habits and sense of home sit uneasily in a watchful small town. Through Ruth (Sara Walker) and her younger sister Lucille (Andrea Burchill), the film follows a household that keeps slipping outside the rules other people expect them to live by. As Sylvie settles in, the girls begin to see her — and the life she offers — in very different ways.
