In early-1980s London, Nowak (Jeremy Irons) leads a small crew of Polish workers hired to cheaply renovate a government official’s flat while living on tourist visas. He handles the job, the money, and the city for men who can’t speak English, using that advantage to keep the work on track as homesickness, temptation, and strain build inside the group. When political unrest in Poland hardens into a military crackdown, Nowak becomes the only one who knows what may be waiting at home, and the gap between what he knows and what he tells his crew starts to define everything around them.
