Pom Poko
ActionAdventureAnimationAnimeComedyDramaFamilyFantasy119 min
As housing developments and shopping malls spread across Japan’s Tama Hills, a community of tanuki — raccoon dogs from Japanese folklore — are pushed from their homes and forced to organize. Voices from Shinchô Kokontei and Yuriko Ishida join a large ensemble as the animals argue over strategy, revive their ancient art of transformation, and begin slipping into human form to disrupt the expansion around them. Pom Poko mixes folkloric shapeshifting, broad comedy, and mounting environmental pressure, with the tanuki’s fight for food and shelter unfolding against a landscape steadily being replaced by suburbs.
