Wall Street hotshot Sherman McCoy is riding high until a wrong turn into the South Bronx turns a late-night drive with his mistress into a hit-and-run scandal. Tom Hanks is McCoy, a wealthy bond trader whose private mistake becomes public spectacle, and Bruce Willis’s Peter Fallow is the shabby reporter who sees the case as his way back into relevance. As the story spreads through late-1980s New York, politicians, lawyers, ministers, and tabloids close in, turning one incident into a citywide scramble over race, class, and status. Brian De Palma’s film adapts Tom Wolfe’s satire of moneyed Manhattan and media opportunism.
