In 1799, amid the Russian invasion of Italy, a widowed German noblewoman is rescued during an attack by a Russian officer, only to find herself later pregnant with no explanation she can accept. Edith Clever is the Marquise, living under her father’s roof as suspicion closes in around her; Bruno Ganz’s Count F returns with an urgent devotion that only deepens the scandal. As family honor, military upheaval, and public shame converge, she takes the startling step of placing a notice in the newspaper, asking the child’s father to identify himself.
