In 1947 Brooklyn, aspiring novelist Stingo rents a room and is drawn into the troubled orbit of his neighbors: Sophie, a Polish immigrant marked by Auschwitz, and her brilliant, volatile lover Nathan. Peter MacNicol’s Stingo becomes first their boarder, then their confidant, as Sophie’s past emerges in flashbacks from prewar Poland and the camps. Meryl Streep is Sophie, carrying memories she can barely speak aloud, while Nathan (Kevin Kline) shifts between charm and instability as the three grow increasingly entangled.
