In a run-down South American oil town, four desperate men take a job no one else wants: driving two trucks loaded with nitroglycerin over mountain roads to an oil-well fire. Yves Montand is among the drivers gambling on the payout, while Charles Vanel’s veteran hauler joins a convoy where a rut in the road or a bad stretch of bridge could set everything off. Under contract to an American oil company, the men inch toward the jungle oil field as suspicions, pride, and exhaustion start to work against them as much as the cargo itself.
