A car bombing on the U.S.-Mexico border pulls Mexican investigator Miguel Vargas into a murder case already being steered by local police captain Hank Quinlan. Charlton Heston is Vargas, a newlywed whose search for the truth keeps colliding with a police force built on intimidation and planted evidence, while Orson Welles’s Quinlan dominates the town as a celebrated cop sliding into open corruption. With his wife Susie (Janet Leigh) isolated in a threatening borderland of cheap motels and criminal hangers-on, the investigation widens into a battle over who gets to define justice.
