Short on cash and trying to get home from New York to Iowa, Susan Applegate buys a child’s train ticket and turns herself into “Sue Sue,” only to end up hiding in the compartment of a kindly army major who takes her at face value. Ginger Rogers is Susan, improvising one lie after another, while Major Philip Kirby (Ray Milland) treats her like a kid even as the mix-up follows him toward his military-school world and his fiancée. In Billy Wilder’s first American film, the setup turns on crowded train cars, social manners, and a disguise that gets harder to maintain the longer it works.
