Writer's block hits Samson Shillitoe hard: the gifted poet and carpet cleaner lashes out at everyone around him, from strangers on the street to the wife trying to hold their household together. Sean Connery is Samson, a womanizer whose appetites and temper keep outrunning his work, while Joanne Woodward is the partner left absorbing the damage. When Samson lands in the care of a psychiatrist whose own marriage is coming apart, the arrangement curdles into a personal feud, with therapy, adultery, and professional revenge all tangled together.
