Allied prisoners of war in a German camp are ordered to face the German national football team in a World War II exhibition match designed as Nazi propaganda. As the game comes together, the prisoners start using training sessions and team selection to cover plans for an escape attempt. Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone are among the POWs drawn into the scheme, alongside football stars including Pelé and Bobby Moore. Directed by John Huston, the film moves between prison-camp routine, uneasy negotiations with the Germans, and the mounting pressure around a match that carries far more than sporting stakes.
