In Clairton, Pennsylvania, three Russian American steelworkers leave the mill, the bar, and a wedding celebration for service in Vietnam. Robert De Niro is Michael, the most controlled of the friends, while Christopher Walken’s Nick shares his hunting trips in the Pennsylvania mountains and his place in the group’s close orbit. The story follows them from a working-class town outside Pittsburgh to wartime Saigon, where violence, separation, and psychological strain begin to alter the rhythms of their friendship and the lives waiting for them back home.
