Beginning in childhood, two girls from opposite worlds carry a turbulent friendship into adulthood: one a rich debutante, the other a cynical performer trying to make a life in show business. Bette Midler is the aspiring entertainer at the center of that bond, while Barbara Hershey is her wealthier counterpart, whose polish and privilege never quite erase the closeness between them. As the years pass, class differences and diverging paths keep pulling them apart and back together, with Garry Marshall’s film tracking the friendship through the changes, resentments, and loyalties that build over time.
