Out-of-work New York actor Michael Dorsey reinvents himself as Dorothy Michaels to land a role on a daytime soap, and the deception quickly grows beyond a paycheck. Dustin Hoffman is Michael, a talented performer with a reputation for being impossible, while Jessica Lange’s Julie is the co-star who leaves him trying to navigate fame, secrecy, and a messy love life at the same time. Teri Garr turns up as Michael’s frustrated friend Sandy, and Dabney Coleman adds another headache as the soap’s leering director. Behind the wigs, auditions, and live-TV nerves, the film keeps its eye on performance, ego, and the gap between how Michael sees women and how Dorothy is treated.
