The Man Who Laughs

DramaHorrorMysteryRomanceThriller110 min

In a shadowed, storybook version of England, Gwynplaine lives with a permanent grin carved into his face, a mark that turns him into a sideshow attraction wherever he goes. Behind that fixed smile is a man who wants ordinary love and dignity, finding both with the blind Dea, whose affection is untouched by the horror others see. As their fragile life together takes shape, Gwynplaine is pulled toward the aristocratic world that first marked him, where his body is treated as spectacle and his past becomes a weapon. Conrad Veidt gives Gwynplaine both ache and menace, while Mary Philbin’s Dea anchors the film’s romance against its gloom.
