Born on the same day in 1901, Alfredo Berlinghieri and Olmo Dalcò grow up on opposite sides of the same estate in rural Emilia, Italy, and remain tied to each other as the country moves through labor unrest, fascism, and war. Robert De Niro is Alfredo, heir to a landowning family, while Gérard Depardieu's Olmo comes from the peasants who work the fields. Bernardo Bertolucci follows their friendship and rivalry across decades of political upheaval, with Dominique Sanda and Donald Sutherland among the figures shaping the world around them.
