In 1950, 24-year-old writer Flannery O’Connor returns to Georgia to live with her mother after a lupus diagnosis upends her plans. Maya Hawke is Flannery, confronting the same disease that killed her father while trying to make her name as a writer; Laura Linney’s Regina is the steady, exacting presence at home. As illness narrows Flannery’s world, the film moves in and out of her imagination and the Southern Gothic stories taking shape in her mind, tying questions of faith, art, suffering, and family to the work she is beginning to create.
