The Contestant
Documentary91 min
In 1998, Tomoaki Hamatsu, known as Nasubi, was shut inside a bare room, naked, starving, and alone, with no idea that his life was being broadcast on national television in Japan to more than 15 million viewers a week. The film revisits that 15-month ordeal through Nasubi’s own account, footage from the original program, and interviews with people tied to the production, including Toshio Tsuchiya. As it retraces the challenge and its aftermath, the documentary follows the collision of isolation, spectacle, and sudden fame as a TV experiment turns private suffering into a national event.
