Harvey

ComedyDramaFantasy104 min

James Stewart is Elwood P. Dowd, a wealthy, courtly drinker whose closest companion is Harvey, a six-foot rabbit spirit almost no one else can see. Embarrassed by Elwood’s cheerful habit of introducing Harvey around town, Josephine Hull’s Veta tries to have her brother committed, setting off a chain of mistakes involving a sanatorium staff, suspicious relatives, and the police. As doors slam and diagnoses shift, the film keeps its odd balance between social comedy and fantasy, with Elwood’s calm good manners at the center of the confusion.
