William Holden is Joe Gillis, a broke Hollywood screenwriter who ducks his creditors by taking refuge in the mansion of Norma Desmond, a silent-era star who still expects a return to the screen. Gloria Swanson’s Norma lives in faded luxury with her butler Max (Erich von Stroheim) and a massive screenplay she wants Joe to fix, drawing him into an arrangement built on money, dependence, and fantasy. Directed by Billy Wilder, the film moves through old Hollywood mansions, studio lots, and New Year’s Eve parties while keeping its focus on the uneasy bond between a man out of options and a woman who refuses to accept obscurity.
