Queen of Katwe
Drama124 min
In Kampala’s Katwe neighborhood, a young girl named Phiona discovers chess through a local outreach program and finds a path beyond the daily grind of selling corn to help her family get by. Madina Nalwanga is Phiona, whose quick grasp of the game draws the attention of coach Robert Katende, with David Oyelowo bringing warmth and discipline to the role. Lupita Nyong’o is her mother, Harriet, wary of anything that might pull her daughter away from home or promise too much. Based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi, the film follows her rise from a crowded slum to the wider world of competition.
