Maria Altmann, an elderly Jewish refugee who fled Vienna during World War II, takes on the Austrian government to recover artwork seized from her family by the Nazis, including Gustav Klimt’s famous portrait known as Woman in Gold. Helen Mirren is Maria, carrying both the sharpness of the present-day legal fight and the weight of what was left behind. At her side is Ryan Reynolds’s Randy Schoenberg, an inexperienced young lawyer who helps turn a personal claim into an international restitution case, pushing from museum records and government resistance all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
