The Squid and the Whale

ComedyDrama81 min

In 1980s Brooklyn, two brothers are pulled between their writer parents as a marriage breaks apart and every loyalty starts to feel like a choice. Drawing on Noah Baumbach’s own childhood, the film follows the divorce through the boys’ shifting alliances, school lives, and ideas about art, sex, and adulthood. Jesse Eisenberg and Owen Kline are the sons at the center of the split, while Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney circle each other as parents whose arguments keep spilling into the household and beyond.
