Michael Douglas is Grady Tripp, a 50-ish English professor and once-celebrated novelist at a Pennsylvania university whose long-stalled follow-up book hangs over a snowy weekend already coming apart. With his wife gone, his personal life in disarray, and the school’s literary festivities underway, Grady stumbles from one complication to the next, often in the company of a talented student writer played by Tobey Maguire. As parties, police trouble, and campus tensions pile up, the film keeps its focus on Grady’s writer’s block, bad decisions, and the uneasy gap between his reputation and his present life.
